About the Item
Joel Sager (1980) was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, the son of a minister and a stay-at-home mother who fostered from an early age his love of drawing and painting. It was under the mentorship of prominent American illustrator Mark English that he began his artistic education in earnest. Inspired by his exposure to illustration yet gravitating in his studio practice toward more painterly work, Sager developed a distinctive style within the larger models of regionalism and American realism.
Sager’s work is deeply rooted in the Midwestern landscape, particularly rural Missouri, which has served as a primary source of inspiration. The subjects of his paintings—often local figures, landscapes, and domestic scenes—reflect his close connection to his environment and the people he knows personally. His body of work is characterized by a stark, almost austere realism, with an emphasis on atmosphere, light, and mood. Sager’s technique is notable for its detailed rendering, sgraffito, and collage to create textures that evoke the tactile quality of the subjects being depicted. Throughout his career, Sager’s work has been highly collected for its ability to capture the emotional and psychological depth of his subjects. His paintings often convey a sense of stillness, quiet tension, and a certain melancholy, reflecting his interest in themes of isolation, memory, and the passage of time

Joel D. Sager (b. 1980) is a contemporary American painter of landscapes, still-life and portraiture. Often drawing on such standard subject matter with economy and singularity— a solitary figure in a room or misplaced sock on a bed— the conceptual element of his work becomes a contemplation on meaning for even the simplest objects: person, place, or thing. Sager's process often involves a distinctive mixture of media, incorporating tar with oil pigments, or wallpaper with squid ink, or graphite and cut paper. Through these unique media compositions, Sager's paintings create a new voice on fundamental elements handed down from art history. Sager’s work has been shown internationally from Hollywood, California to Yokohama, Japan and can be found in both private and corporate collections. His paintings have been seen in print at True/False Film Fest and in the publications of Persea Books, New York. Sager resides with his family in Columbia, Missouri.

A Surmountable Problem Writ Large
By Adam Mysock
Located in New Orleans, LA
After: The Young Beggar by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (c. 1645-50) and Approaching Thunder Storm by Martin Johnson Heade (1859)
The main character of this painting finds himself mired in a pond as a sizeable storm approaches, and yet – instead of standing up and removing himself from the trouble – he chooses to focus on the discomfort of his wet clothing.
This child, attending to a minor nuisance rather than enacting a permanent solution, stands in as an icon of our current sociopolitical leadership – leadership which has defined our modern reality by its preference for constantly kicking the can on major issues (climate change, income inequality, various forms of discrimination, and so much more) as the rest of us are left to watch from the shore.
ADAM MYSOCK was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1983 - the son of an elementary school English teacher and a lab technician who specialized in the manufacturing of pigments. On account of a steady stream of folk tales from his mother and his father’s vividly dyed work clothes, he developed an interest in narrative and representative painting from an early age. Mysock earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Art History in 2004 from Tulane University and an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2007.
After his studies, Mysock taught at the university level for nearly a decade, including as a Professor of Practice at Tulane University. In 2016, he and his family moved back to Cincinnati, where he currently serves as coordinator for Manifest Drawing Center.
Mysock’s work has been exhibited throughout the country and is in private collections across the US, including the 21c Museum, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Ruslan Yusupov, Thomas Coleman and Michael...
