John Constable
Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk on 11 June 1776 and attended a school in Lavenham and his father hoped he would enter the church. His father was adamant that he would not be a painter as a profession. He met a local man named John Dunthorne who painted local scenes, mainly in nearby fields. His love of all things natural stemmed from this. Later he copied works by Girtin from a book that was lent to him by Sir George Beaumont.
Sir George then became his patron in 1795 and he was allowed to go to London to study once his parents realised his talents. In 1799 he was admitted as a pupil to study at the Royal Academy and in 1802 a landscape was put in the summer exhibition.
He worked hard but had little recognition of his talents and it wasn’t until 1819 that he was finally recognised as an Associate of the Academy and his works began to gain in popularity and several of his works were bought by a French speculator and sent them to the Paris Salon in 1824
In 1827 his ‘Corn Field’ was exhibited at the British Institute where it was among other great artists include Claude and Cuyp. At that time he moved to Hampstead and had his own studio and his works were acknowledged as amongst the finest of their time.
He died suddenly on 1 April 1837 and his works are now known the world over with many pieces in the biggest museums of the world.
