About the Item
Attributed toJohn Nost Sartorius (1759–1828)
Fox Hunter and Hounds
Oil on canvas, circa 1810
Provenance: Ackermann
Johnson, London
Though the painting has impeccable provenance as it is not signed my description should read attributed to.
A fine and spirited example of early 19th-century English sporting art by the celebrated equestrian painter John Nost Sartorius, this elegant composition captures a mounted huntsman in full scarlet coat, accompanied by his hounds bounding energetically across an autumnal English landscape. Rendered with the distinctive clarity and balance typical of Sartorius’ hand, the work evokes the refinement and pageantry of traditional British country pursuits.
The scene is both restrained and dynamic—an intimate moment of calm before the chase, the horse depicted with anatomical precision, the hounds alert and finely modelled. Sartorius, part of a dynasty of painters renowned for their animal and sporting subjects, was highly sought after in his lifetime by aristocratic patrons and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.
This painting retains an excellent surface and presents beautifully in a gilt-edged frame of appropriate period character. It bears provenance from Ackermann
Johnson, a notable 19th-century London publisher and dealer known for their connection to prominent artists and collectors.
Works of this quality and early date by Sartorius are increasingly scarce on the market, especially in such condition and with reputable provenance. An ideal acquisition for the collector of English sporting art or traditional interiors seeking historical charm with pedigree.
Framed in a hand made English gilt and Walnut frame.

John Nost Sartorius (British, 1759–1828)
Men Out Bird Shooting in a Woodland Landscape, circa 1820
Oil on wooden panel, in a fine antique gilt frame
Unsigned
A finely observed early 19th-century sporting picture by John Nost Sartorius, one of the most respected figures in the English tradition of animal and sporting painting. The composition depicts a quiet moment in the field: a sportsman advancing through woodland with his gun, accompanied by attentive pointers, their forms crisply picked out against the darker recesses of the forest.
Sartorius was celebrated for his ability to combine accurate animal portraiture with atmospheric landscape settings, and this work is characteristic of his mature period. The dogs are rendered with anatomical confidence and individual character, while the surrounding woodland is handled with a restrained, naturalistic palette that lends depth and calm to the scene. The narrative is understated and refined, intended as much for contemplation as for sporting reference.
Painted on a wooden panel, as was common for Sartorius’s smaller and more intimate works, the picture retains a pleasing surface quality and detail. It is housed in an antique gilt frame of appropriate date, enhancing its presence and lending a strong period feel.
Works by Sartorius were highly sought after by country house patrons in the early 19th century and were often commissioned to record favourite dogs or shooting grounds. Today, paintings of this type remain especially appealing to collectors of British sporting art and sit equally well in traditional country house interiors or more formal libraries and studies.
