About the Item

Val d’Aosta is a mountainous region in northwestern Italy, bordering France and Switzerland in the heart of the Alps. John Singer Sargent completed a series of Val d’Aosta watercolors that demonstrates his masterful translation of watercolor’s fluid, luminous qualities, capturing light and atmosphere with vivid immediacy and vitality. Painted during his prolific summers in the region between 1904 and 1910, these works depart from formal portraiture, revealing his deep engagement with nature and a freer, more expressive approach to painting. Sargent’s work is represented in the world’s most prestigious museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate in London, the Louvre in Paris, and the Uffizi in Florence, among many others.
