About the Item
Victorian Nineteenth Century Impressionist Rural Scene with Sunsetting on Farm Workers returning home. Farm Workers in the Countryside with their Dog and a Haycart with Horses in the background. A Signed Oil on Canvas mounted on stretchers and Framed in a Gilt Victorian Swept Frame.
Paulman remains, for the most, part a mystery. His works, however, demonstrate a painter of great skill with a passion for landscapes and the British Countryside. I wonder if it may even be a pseudonym under which an artist, contracted to a particular gallery, may use from time to time, a not uncommon practice.
The majority of his work depicts life in the country and the workers who lived and worked there. He employs an earthy palette which promotes a sense of the timeless and transcendent nature of the countryside and the seasons. His sky is rich in colour with the peachy tones of the soon to be setting sun. His figures are believable and the dog - well I can never be displeased with an appealing canine friend!
His work can be compared to Benjamin Williams Leader and the French artist Jules Bastien-Lepage.
Paulman is known to have exhibited at the Leeds City Art Gallery around 1900.
