About the Item

Jules BRUNETAUT Marseille, 1871 – Marseille, 1957 Oil on wood panel 40.5 x 50 cm (48.5 x 59 cm with frame) Signed lower left “J. Brunetaut” Modern frame Our painting is a view of the Corniche of Marseille represented here with a magnificent blue sea, two men in a boat and a very beautiful light at sunset. Jules Brunetaut is a painter from Marseille active in the 1910s to the 1940s. He painted Marseille and its surroundings and was one of the marine painters of Marseille of the early 20th century, the most famous of whom is certainly Jean-Baptiste Olive. These painters were interested in painting the link between the sea and the shore, in a soft, luminous style, and very much within the painting (like the famous Chardin whom Olive studied). Brunetaut's master was the Marseille native Adolphe Gaussen, who was a friend of Jean-Baptiste Olive and who was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1928 and he was also curator of the Cantini museum in Marseille. If Jules Brunetaut remained faithful to Marseille and if the subject he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1920 was a "Madrague in Marseille", he also enjoyed success in the 1910s as an orientalist painter with scenes in the desert in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. But always with very beautiful material effects and a beautiful light which makes all the charm of his paintings.
