About the Item
Mid 20th Century oil on canvas landscape of Saint Paul de Vence by Jules Gustave Lempereur. The painting is signed bottom left and is mounted on a silk covered board for hanging.
A charming view of the iconic south of France hillside village of Saint Paul de Vence home to famous artists including Matisse, Braque, Calder, Miro, Modigliani, Picasso also Giono, Prevert and Chagall. Lempereur has used quick and lively brushstrokes and an impasto technique to give a vivacity to the composition. He has captured the ancient stone buildings with their red terracotta roof tiles, the church bell tower at the crest of the hill. Below the village the green of the trees and plants frames the scene. Overhead white clouds drift lazily in an azure blue sky.
Jules Gustave Lempereur (1902-1985) was a painter of the Belgian school most famous and known for his paintings in the style of Jean Gabriel Domergue.
