About the Item
“Blackbirds in Leaves” presents a quiet autumn shoreline with a strong sense of place and season. The foreground is a thick layer of fallen leaves in gold, amber, and rust, dotted with blackbirds that peek out and move through the foliage. Their rich blue-black color stands in beautiful contrast to the warm ground, bringing energy and rhythm to the scene. Bare trees rise against a soft, silvery sky, where a bright sun glows through the clouds and adds a cool, clear light to the landscape. The view opens toward water in the distance, giving the painting depth while keeping your eye engaged with the lively detail up front.
Karl Hartman is known for landscapes that feel familiar yet slightly unexpected, using careful color and crisp forms to highlight the mood of a moment in nature. His work often focuses on transitions—weather shifting, light changing, seasons turning—and invites a slower look. This piece is oil on an aluminum panel and is framed in a natural wood float frame, ready to hang.

Born in 1956 in Billings, Montana, Karl Hartman is a contemporary artist whose meticulously crafted oil paintings on panel captivate viewers with their dreamlike quality and subtle surrealism. Represented in New York, where he received his Master's in Painting from the School of Visual Arts (SVA), Hartman’s work is rooted in the tradition of landscape painting, yet it transcends mere representation, inviting the audience into worlds that hover between reality and imagination. His compositions often evoke a sense of magic realism, where the familiar is imbued with an otherworldly atmosphere, prompting contemplation of the boundaries between the natural and the fantastical. Hartman’s process is marked by a disciplined attention to detail and a mastery of his medium of oil paint. Each brushstroke is deliberate, resulting in works that are both technically precise and emotionally resonant. His landscapes, though often inspired by real locations, are transformed through his unique vision, becoming poetic meditations on light, space, and memory. The interplay of shadow and illumination in his paintings creates a sense of depth and mystery, drawing the viewer into a narrative that feels both intimate and universal. Inspired by a wide range of influences, from the Hudson River School to contemporary surrealism, Hartman’s work bridges the past and present, offering a fresh perspective on the genre of landscape painting. His professional achievements include exhibitions in prestigious galleries and museums, where his work has been celebrated for its originality and craftsmanship. Karl Hartman’s art invites us to pause and reflect, revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary and reminding us of the enduring power of painting to evoke wonder.

"Blue Sky in Leaves", Surrealist Landscape Naive Primitive Acrylic Painting
By Henriette Gorbitz
Located in Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
This artwork depicts a small pond in a summer or spring mountain landscape in the background. The artist applied different tints in rectangular areas starting from the center. It may suggest different seasons, but it's not, since the vegetation doesn't change. The sunset sky is unaffected by these differences of tint. Two of these areas are filled with mosaic patterns, one light blue and the other yellow. The surrounding area is made as a carpet of leaves with strong veins. On top of these leaves are leaf-shaped patches of sky. Four large leaves also cover the landscape.
This artwork is not framed.
