This original, handmade oil on panel painting, Washington Park (2009), is by the late Ken Valastro (1954–2014). Measuring 8 x 10 inches (20.32 x 25.40 cm) and framed to approximately 9 x 11 inches, it is a secondary market acquisition (previously owned) in well-preserved condition. Valastro was known for creating dynamic oil paintings that integrate bold color contrasts with vigorous brushwork. Although much of his oeuvre focused on the energy of urban scenes, he also portrayed suburban locales, marinas, and rural vignettes featuring vintage machinery like Farmall tractors.
In this particular painting, Valastro captures a tranquil park environment filled with tall trees, soft light, and reflective water. Two small figures near the water’s edge add a subtle narrative focus to the composition, inviting the viewer to engage with the scene’s sense of place and quiet human presence. The atmospheric background—punctuated by high-chroma highlights—demonstrates Valastro’s hallmark approach to conveying movement and relationships within the landscape. Thick impasto and slashes of color underscore his signature, full-body painting technique, which he likened to the controlled, boundary-pushing motion of a championship skier.
A student of the Art Students League of Denver, where he later taught for seven years, Valastro studied under several notable artists, including Kim English, his greatest mentor.
