About the Item

Lauritz Holst Exhibited 1878 - 1926 Picture Size: 16.5 x 29" (41.25 x 72.5cm) Outside Frame Size: 22.5 x 35" (56.25 x 87.5cm) He was born in Bogense, Denmark in 1848 Holst was a marine painter with life and soul who loved the sea. He had a sense of moods and lighting and over the years he was able to develop an ability to reproduce the waves and the moving sea with a strong illusory effect. He was the son of a master painter and from an early age he decided he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. At the age of 20 he went to America visiting Mexico, San Fransisco and lived in Chicago for a while. Here he started being recognized as a successful artist and became a member of the Chicago Academy. He returned to Denmark the early 1870s before traveling to England. He returned home in 1878 but frequently returned to England. He set up a studio in Chelsea, South Kensington and in 1896 settled in Bournemouth where he stayed for the rest of his life. After 1891 he did not exhibit in Denmark and was best known in America and England. Both the Danish and English Royal Families bought paintings by him.
