Known for his luminous, detailed depictions of forests, rivers, and rural countryside, he became one of the notable landscape artists of the late 19th century. Born: October 1, 1838, in Pierrelaye, France Died: July 20, 1891, in Paris Style: Realism/Naturalism, Landscape Painting Movement: Associated with the Barbizon School; Founding figure of the Cernay-la-Ville artists' colony. From 1865 onwards, he exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris. His works were appreciated by museums and collectors; today they hang in the Musée d’Orsay and various regional museums, among others.
