Exceptional rendition of the California Redwoods by Leonora M. Naylor Penniman. Signed lower right M. Naylor. Image, 14"H x 9"W.The painting is painted in the style of Mrs. Pennimans's favorite teachers; Frank Heath. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 2, 1884. Leonora Naylor moved to Chicago with her family in 1897. She attended the University of Chicago where her father was a member of the faculty. While there she studied art with Emma Siboni and her drawings were chosen to be exhibited at the Paris Int'l Expo. In 1906 she went to Santa Cruz, CA to visit an aunt. While there, she met Harry Penniman and married him in 1907. She was a founding member of the Santa Cruz Art League and responsible for inaugurating the series of statewide exhibitions there. She later spent one summer of study at Mills College under Lyonel Feininger; thereafter, criticism by Armin Hansen put the finishing touches on her art training. Mrs. Penniman and her constant painting companions, Margaret Rogers and Cor DeGavere, were known as the "Santa Cruz Three." Primarily a watercolorist, she also taught china painting to small groups of women until her death in Santa Cruz on April 7, 1957.
