About the Item
Lesley Anne Spowart (American, born 1957)
"5 Orange Trees" 2016
Oil Paint, Canvas, Stretcher Bars
The artist signed the bottom left and back of the painting.
Lesley Anne Spowart’s "5 Orange Trees" presents a serene yet intriguing landscape that invites contemplation of the interplay between nature, simplicity, and color. The painting depicts a gentle rolling hillside, where five vibrant red trees punctuate the landscape, their vivid hue contrasting beautifully against the muted greens and yellows of the surrounding earth. The trees’ minimalistic forms seem almost like markers on a journey, symbolic yet abstract in their simplicity, standing quietly against a vast sky.
Spowart’s choice of color and composition imbues the scene with a quiet energy, where the warmth of the red trees stands as an oasis within a tranquil world. The brushstrokes are soft and layered, giving texture to the landscape while allowing the fluidity of the natural world to emerge. What is unseen in the painting is the atmosphere of calm that it evokes, a stillness that captures both the beauty of the earth and the serenity of its rhythms. The scene may be simple, but it speaks to the complexity and depth of nature's quiet moments.

David Leviathan's "Trunks" is a 39" x 45" contemporary landscape abstract that captures the essence of a forest's heart. The canvas is alive with a rich tapestry of autumnal hues, ranging from deep umbers to fiery oranges and subtle golds. Leviathan's technique gives rise to a textured surface that mimics the rugged bark of tree trunks, standing tall amidst a flurry of color. The style is both abstract and suggestive, inviting the viewer to feel the organic growth and the cyclical decay inherent in nature. The painting evokes a sense of resilience and majesty, paying homage to the timeless beauty of the natural world.

"Copse", oil painting, landscape, abstract, trees, field, sky, light, copper
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Copse" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – the landscape with trees on the horizon, the wide full sky bearing down with clouds and light. The picture surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but note the speed and swift conviction of those brushstrokes. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact.
