Artist Statement:
Built in 1713, the Old State House was the spot where early colonial Bostonians first heard the Declaration of Independence. It's the oldest surviving public building in Boston and the Georgian-style architecture stands out in the midst of modern skyscrapers. The State Street Station entrance to the MBTA subway train is located directly in the basement of the Old State House. I love to see the juxtaposition of old versus new when history meets progress.
The palette is rich in warm reds and soft golds for the Old State House, contrasted against violets, greys, and pinks in the towering skyline behind it. This interplay of colours captures not only architectural form but also the energy of Boston as a city that has always embraced change while honouring its past. The work resonates with both nostalgia and forward momentum, inviting the viewer to see the building as a living witness to history.
Artist biography:
Lisa Bisbee is a contemporary cityscape artist based in New York City. In her ongoing series of over 50 oil paintings titled "Bright Lights Pink City," Bisbee captures snapshots of urban architecture within a dreamlike atmosphere. Her work portrays both ordinary moments of daily city life and iconic landmarks such as the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Bridge, and Washington Square Park. Navigating the concrete jungle is an exhilarating experience for her, teeming with anticipation at every street corner. She aims to encapsulate the magical sensation of seeing the city with fresh eyes, imbuing her artwork with the essence of this exciting perspective. Through her art, she invites viewers to embark on a journey that renews their connection to the vibrant spirit of NYC, sparking a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for its enchanting allure.
Bisbee's NYC series of over 50 oil paintings depicts her adventures through the city, using vivid colors to showcase a vibrant metropolis. Influenced by her study of art history, particularly the Fauvism movement, she adopts the movement’s unique arrangement of colors—offbeat and unreal. She blends this concept with the exciting energy of New York City, aiming for the vibrancy to pop off the canvas much like how modern technology allows filters to alter photos and edit reality. Her palette includes neon pinks, fluorescent oranges, deep purples, bright yellows, and blues. Using Gapka oil paint from a small handmade artisan paint company, the colors achieve incredible saturation.
Each painting in Bisbee's series serves as a snapshot of her urban expeditions through the city. Inspired by her photographs, she translates the experience of being in New York into joyful, vibrant oil paintings. Her work illustrates urban architecture and city life, from typical moments at crosswalks to landmark destinations like the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Bridge, and Washington Square Park. Artist Pat Forbes depicts an abstract landscape with large towering structures under a murky atmosphere. "This piece reflects on the pleasures of traveling, and the joy of experiencing new and exciting places," says Pat. Uneven lines make up chunks of large structural shapes drawn close to one another. A green glowing sphere shines above the city that features prominent hues of blue, green, and yellow.
About the Artist
Pat Forbes is an abstract painter whose aesthetic is heavily influenced by her 20 years as a collector and dealer of Middle Eastern textiles. Pat, who lives on the west coast of Florida, uses a neutral palette to present her interpretation of the world around her– from marshes and mountains to stones and spiderwebs. She is drawn to pattern and design, both of which influence the use of balanced repetition in her work. Pat’s muted colors invite pensive meditation, while her deliberate use of line guides the eye through satisfyingly symmetrical compositions.
