About the Item

El Capitan stands front and center in "Freerider in the Heart of the Valley," surrounded by hundreds of trees in the Yosemite Valley. Deep emerald greens of the shadows complement the clear blue skies, broken by a contrail bringing a sense of the contemporary into a historical landscape. Liz Harper Freerider in the Heart of the Valley, 2025 oil on linen Unframed Dimensions: 40h x 60w in 101.60h x 152.40w cm Framed Dimensions: 41h x 61w in 104.14h x 154.94w cm LZH004 "I grew up in Northern California, surrounded by emerald pines and endless mountains. Memories of trips to the Sierra Nevadas have defined who I am. My whole life was spent wandering the hidden rivers of the Santa Cruz Mountains, paddling out to the jumping rock of Donner Lake, and happily brushing the dust off my boots at the end of each day. It was under those trees where I learned how to be myself. Led through life by my older brother, happily wandering off-trail alongside him, the outdoors became a space for advice, quiet thinking, wonder, and curiosity. Today I find myself searching for the same serenity found beneath those trees - trees I have watched slowly disappear from my beloved valley, lost to an onslaught of fires. I will always cherish the soft sounds of the woods: the crinkle of leaves beneath my boots, the drilling of white-headed woodpeckers, the cracking of ponderosa pine branches, and the sweet trickle of a creek. Through paint, I intend to replicate those moments. I paint in memory of the lands that defined my being. Colors of western autumns and evergreen forests seep through each piece. I ensure that each moment of these beloved landscapes is replicated with care; each pine tree, rock face, and horizon line. My brother taught me to notice - to pay close attention in every aspect of life and slow down as often as I can. I carry this ethos into every part of my painting practice. From the careful preparation of linen surfaces to the slow rendering of every detail in the landscape, my process mirrors the attentiveness I hold in my time spent outdoors - eternalizing the wonder and beauty of the land." - Liz Harper

Near Wagon Mound, NM - Realistic Landscape Oil Painting
By Jeff Aeling
Located in Chicago, IL
Aeling’s fascination with meteorology is unmistakable in this dramatic skyscape. Since his earliest years in the West, he has been captivated by weather’s capacity to alter the emotional temperature of a landscape. In this painting, the low, turbulent cloudbank reveals his deep knowledge of sky structures—an understanding informed by both scientific observation and personal experience. The luminous blue patches above suggest hope breaking through uncertainty, a recurring theme in his atmospheric work. Jeff Aeling Near Wagon Mound, NM Oil on panel 10h x 14w in 25.40h x 35.56w cm JAE055 Jeff Aeling (1958–2025): The Sky Remembers Through Jeff Aeling’s eyes, the landscape becomes a world shaped as much by air as by earth. In works such as North of Las Vegas, NM and Pond Near St. Cloud, MN, he balances the quiet structure of plains and wetlands with skies alive in constant motion. His mastery of atmosphere is unmistakable in Light Pillars (2023) and Light Pillar (2023), where rare optical events turn night into architecture. Even intimate scenes like Crabapple, Dogwoods, and Red Bud find their emotional power under skies that lend the land its shifting character. Aeling’s winters in Hawaii deepened his sensitivity to movement and weather. Surfing taught him to read the rhythm of the ocean, a knowledge reflected in Wave, Kauai (2018), where a breaking wave becomes a luminous wall of force. In Volcano (2023), he channels the islands’ elemental drama, linking fire, vapor, and sky through the same atmospheric vocabulary found in his plains paintings...
