About the Item
A fine impressionist coastal painting with boats in the harbor and a cabbage garden in the foreground by French artist Louis Abel-Truchet (1857-1918). Louis Abel-Truchet was born in Versailles in 1857. He enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1890 to study under Jules Lefebvre and Jean Benjamin-Constant. From 1891, Abel-Truchet began to exhibit his work at various Salons, including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Humoristes, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (of which he was a member from 1910), and the Salon des Artistes Français.
Abel-Truchet worked in an Impressionist style, and his favorite subjects were scenes of Montmartre life — café-concerts, the Place Pigalle, the Cirque Médrano, the Folies-Bergère and the Moulin Rouge, the Bal des Quat'Z-Arts.
Oil on canvas, signed lower right with a dedication “Sympathiquement à M. Levy,” and framed in a molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 15.25 in H x 18.25 in W, actual; 22.5 in H x 25.75 in W, framed.

Louis Abel-Truchet
Louis Abel-Truchet was a major French painter, etcher and lithographer of his time. He was born in Versailles in 1857. He is well known for his paintings portraying the turn of the century life in Paris. He was a student of the well known Julian Academy in Paris and was a student of Julian Lefebvre and Benjamin Constant. Paris was not the only city he painted, he only produced some magnificent works showing other cities such as Venice, Sienna and Marseille. Abel-Truchet was deemed by many to be an 'Impressionist' due to the style of work he created, yet the wealth and variety of work he created throughout his life make it impossible to define his role as an artist only through impressionism. His role as a satirist of the time was also a major part of his life and this motivated him to be one of the founding members of the Society of Humorists. He has favorably been compared to the great satirists of the day such as Forian.

A colorful Cape Ann, Massachusetts marine harbor scene with boats docked by American artist Emile Albert Gruppé (1896-1978). Gruppé was born in Rochester, NY, and is renowned for his New England landscapes and vigorous portrayals of the harbors and houses of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The son of landscape artist Charles P. Gruppé (1860-1940), Emile enjoyed a long and successful career that spanned over six decades.In 1925, Gruppé began spending summers in Gloucester. He established a studio on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester where he taught plein-air classes. In 1942 —along with Bridgman, Carlson, Miller and Chapman—he established the Gruppé Summer School, which he continued to operate until 1970.Gruppé’s works hang in many colleges and museums: Smith College, Silberman College in Montreal, the University of Idaho, the Los Angeles Museum, the San Antonio Museum and the de Cordova Museum. His paintings are also at the White House in Washington, D.C. and the Gruppe Summer School in Gloucester.
