Louis Aimé Japy was born in the Doubs region of France. He visited Italy at the beginning of his career and painted many Italian subjects. Later he turned his concentration to the French countryside, particularly the Jura and Doubs in the Franche-Comté region, for which he became best known.
Japy was a student of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875) and François Louis Français (1814–1897), and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1864. He was awarded a medal in 1870, and a second-class medal in 1873. In 1883 he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français, was awarded silver medals at the Expositions Universelles in Paris in 1889 and 1900. In 1906 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur confirming the high regard in which he was held in his lifetime.
