About the Item
Twentieth Century Impressionist Framed Oil Painting on Panel of Ponte Vecchio, Florence with buildings along the River Arno. Signed bottom left.
This painting was purchased by the French Artist Charles Perron 1893 - 1958 and was in his collection for many years, in recent years, it has been in an important collection in the UK.
Louis Desire- Lucas was a leading light in the famous Pont Aven School of Painters, encouraged and led initially by the artist Gaugin. Desire-Lucas was a Breton Painter who lived all his life in Brittany though he received a travel grant in 1901 and painted in Holland, Germany, Spain and Italy, it can be assumed this painting dates from around that time, or at least the early part of the twentieth century.
For Desire- Lucas, the true aim of painting "is not the imitation of things, but the sensation they suggest to us and their situation in the space through coloured volume" - couldn't have put it better myself!!
This is a truly impressive painting in fine, ready to hang condition in a bespoke handmade frame.
