About the Item
An early painting by influential San Francisco Bay Area modern artist Lucien Labaudt.
Works by Labaudt do not show up often in the open market, and this work is in fine, original condition.
Lucien Labaudt was born in Paris, France in 1880. By 1906 he moved to the Untied States, and by 1910 he had taken up a studio in San Francisco, CA.
In 1919 Labaudt began teaching at the California School of Fine Arts.
Labaudt painted murals in public buildings in Los Angeles, and, during the WWII was one a select few civilian artists that were chosen to join the United States Army Art Program. When that program was defunded, Labaudt joined the war art program of Life Magazine.
Labaudt lost his life in an airplane crash in India, while in his way to China where he had been assigned, to capture scenes of guerrilla warfare. None of his personal belongings or sketches from this time period survived.
This work is an early work by the artist, dating from 1924.
It is oil on canvas, and is housed in a period frame.
