About the Item
Antique Venice Canal oil painting on canvas of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, signed in the lower right by Italian artist Luigi Moretti (1884-1950).
This accomplished oil painting from the 1930's is incredibly eye-catching. The artist has cleverly used light and depth in his endeavour to immortalise a scene on the Venice Canal. On the left of the painting the branches of a tree protrude from a narrow balcony just above the water. This with the other foliage, some draped over a stone balcony, is thickly painted with impasto enforced paints and highlighted with the dawn light appearing out from the side of the building. This light, promising another sunny day, shines on the water below but takes note of the dark and guarded waters next to the building and under the boats. The light is also reflected on the sails of the barges moored to ancient wooden posts, providing nature's wake-up call for another day of toil. The beautiful tonal facades of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute loom across the canal, waiting for the hazy light to lift so that the sun can warm them and all that separates them from the other shore is a lonesome gondola making its early journey down the canal.

Date: 1930's
Condition: The painting is in good vintage condition, you should expect minor imperfections associated with age. The frame is most likely the original and again has imperfections throughout associated with age and wear and tear, particularly the inner sleeve that has splintered.
Signed: Luigi Moretti (1884-1950). Moretti was born in Venice on 21 June 1884 and painted in Paris and Venice and exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1911 onwards, with the Independents, and with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Often working in Paris, he produced many scenes of Parisian life. However, he is best known for his views of Venice.
