About the Item
Urban Landscape V – Migratory Birds is a unique painting by contemporary artist Lumi Mizutani. The painting is made with Japanese pigments and gold leaves on Japanese paper mounted on panel. This artwork is a diptych composed of two wood panels of 27,3 x 24,2 cm (10.8 × 9.5 in); the two panels are joined and the total dimensions are 32,3 x 54 cm (12.7 × 21.3). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The composition is dominated by a majestic pine tree that spreads across the canvas, rendered with meticulous detail in deep, dark tones. Its organic intricacy stands in striking contrast to the luminous red background, whose intensity evokes a timeless and dramatic atmosphere. The painting unfolds across two panels—a format often found in traditional Japanese art—yet the pine extends gracefully between them, uniting both sides into a single, harmonious scene.
Above, celestial motifs introduce a symbolic dimension: a large golden orb, evoking either the sun or the moon, glows in the upper right. Around it, birds in dark silhouette trace delicate arcs across the sky, while on the left, a second flock rendered in vivid blue pigment takes flight. These migratory birds suggest ideas of passage, transformation, and the cycles of nature, infusing the landscape with vitality and movement.
This image encapsulates the essence of Lumi Mizutani’s artistic universe. In her figurative series, the Japanese painter pays poetic homage to the landscapes of her homeland—celebrating nature’s grace, from the stoic strength of pines to the fleeting beauty of blossoms. Her art expresses a profound reverence for the natural world, where tradition and emotion coexist in quiet harmony.
A painter and lithographer, Mizutani draws deeply from classical Japanese techniques, reinterpreting them through continuous experimentation. Her ink works and paintings carry this lineage forward while exploring new expressive territories. As she explains:
“I felt the desire to introduce colors, especially Japanese pigments familiar from my childhood. Japanese painting thus became part of my expression and my life. While honoring ancestral techniques and codes, I aim to create a personal, contemporary mark that stirs emotion in the viewer.”

Lumi Mizutani
Painter and lithographer, Lumi Mizutani draws her inspiration from traditional Chinese and Japanese painting techniques. Her ink drawings and her paintings extend this tradition, and, through constant experimentation, carry her towards new horizons. For a few years now Lumi Mizutani’s work has revolved around the duality between abstract and figurative, black and colour, the spontaneity of the gesture (the ink painting) and the patient composition work (the painting with pigment). Thanks to these antagonisms she finds the necessary and complementary resources to express herself. “I felt the desire to introduce colors, especially Japanese color pigments, familiar to my childhood. Japanese painting thus entered my artistic expression and my life. While respecting the ancestral techniques and codes, I strive to create a personal and contemporary footprint that challenges the viewer by the emotion it arouses.“

"White Crow" Japanese landscape painting mineral pigments on silk nature bird
By Maki Kuchida
Located in Kowloon, Hong Kong
White Crow is a 2020 landscape work with a protagonist bird, the white crow by Maki Kuchida. This work demonstrates Maki's delicate painting skills with a lot of details in one work. She applied aluminum leaf on this work to create a perspective in the background. Maki combines the Japanese landscape painting technique with the Chinese one thus her landscape work is unique in its own way. White Crow is the bird of fortune and peace in the Japanese culture. On the bottom right, shadows of another mascot, coyote, can be seen. Coyote is one of Maki's favorite icons which can be found in many of her landscape paintings.
The painted size of the work is approx. 27 x 18cm, while the framed size is approx. 47x38cm. It is framed with archival grade mount. There will be a certificate of authenticity issued with your acquisition.
Maki's paintings may seem deceptively simple at first but indeed the colors and texture are achieved through a labor-intensive and time-consuming process as painting on silk for one color requires at least 8 layers of pigments. Maki paints using mineral pigments on silk...
