The paintings of Marein Konijn are each, in their own way, an intimate portrait—of existence, of growing up, of nature, or of the elements that make nature so extraordinary for all of us.
The artist from Groningen won the 'Prix de Norvège' upon her graduation for her work. With her bold and versatile brushstrokes, she brings a quiet and tonal serenity to her paintings. Marein Konijn draws inspiration from deserted landscapes. Driving through Groningen, she is, as she describes it, touched by the rain, reflections, and contrasts of an abandoned environment—memories of what once was. The beauty she experiences there makes her feel small. She takes these images with her to the studio, where she immerses herself in the canvas, striving to create her own reality without losing sight of the real one. Her often tonal works convey drama and emptiness—a beauty that Marein Konijn feels at ease with and seeks to share with others, to move the viewer.
Marein Konijn herself says:
"Sometimes I find myself in places, like the corn maze, where nature plays tricks on me. The beauty I see there makes me feel small. I take those places with me to my studio, I wrestle with them, and try to capture them on my canvases. Sometimes the brushstrokes flow effortlessly, and I lose myself in the world that emerges on my canvases. I love that, becoming so absorbed in the work created by my own hands that nothing else matters. Sometimes I imagine scenes in my paintings. Reality in my work is never far away. I love darkness—not because I intentionally want to create dramatic works, but I often end up there anyway. That’s where I feel comfortable. My aim is not to paint the world around me exactly as it is, but rather to capture a certain atmosphere that grips the viewer. When that happens, I am moved myself. Because being able to create something with paint that touches someone else brings me immense joy."
