Marion ButlerEwald(1910–1944) was an American Impressionist and Modernist artist known for her landscape, figure, and genre paintings. Although her career was brief, she exhibited widely in major galleries across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic United States. Born in 1910 in Meriden, Connecticut. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Her talent was recognized early; she won a prize at PAFA in 1927 at the age of 17. Ewald was active primarily in Maryland and Connecticut. She is noted for a "Fauvist" and "Modernist" style, with works often featuring vibrant colors and expressive brushwork. Subject Matter: Her portfolio includes animal scenes, interiors, still lifes (some in the style of Cezanne), and landscapes. One of her most praised works was a painting of the 12th Jump of the Maryland Hunt Cup Race, created for the Maryland Exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair. She painted historical murals in Harford County, Maryland, including depictions of the signers of the 1775 Bush Declaration. Exhibitions: Her work was shown at prestigious institutions, including: Baltimore Museum of Art Phillips Memorial Gallery (now The Phillips Collection) in Washington, D.C. Corcoran Gallery of Art (1941) Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1942) Final Years and Legacy Death: Ewald died of an illness in Baltimore on May 22, 1944, at the age of 34. Burial: She is buried in East Haddam, Connecticut. Estate: Many of her paintings bear an artist's estate stamp on the reverse, often found on works appearing at auction today.
