About the Item

Warm air seems to move through this scene as the eye wanders along a gentle swale dotted with granite boulders, low stone walls and scrubby autumn color. A ribbon of meadow pulls us toward the distance while stands of maple and beech glow with notes of saffron, russet and olive. The sky is laid in with fine diagonal hatching, a soft skein of brushwork that keeps the light active across the picture plane. Howard paints with short, broken strokes for foliage and scumbled passages for turf, then sets bright accents of cadmium orange and crimson against cool greens to suggest the turn of the season. Those quick, decisive touches animate the rocks and hedgerows and describe the New England ground itself, famously lean and stony, where pastures are stitched together by walls made from what the fields gave up. The painting reads as a faithful memory of a day spent outside, possibly painted from nature and tightened later in the studio. What makes the canvas sing is its structure. The long S-curve of the hollow gives an easy rhythm, while the two larger tree masses hold the right and left in balance. The sky’s cross-grain strokes echo the grasses below. The result is a quietly confident landscape that is both specific and broadly emblematic of the northeastern countryside at the moment when American painters embraced plein-air color. Howard belongs to the generation that carried Impressionist light into regional subjects, from Old Lyme and Cos Cob to Ogunquit and beyond. Her landscape sits comfortably in that story. The work is oil on canvas and is signed in the lower right. It is housed in a wonderful carved gilt frame. Size: 22.25 inches tall by 27.25 inches wide (painting) 29.5 inches tall by 35.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection, FL; Acquired from the above About the artist: Marion P. Howard, born 1883, was from the Roxbury section of Boston, and she studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She later moved from Marlboro, Massachusetts to Washington, D.C. from 1917 to 1921. Howard exhibited in a two-woman show with Mary Rosamond Coolidge (b. 1884) at the Boston City Club. Howard is considered a “Tarbellite” as her landscapes reveal the influence of her teacher, Edmund Charles Tarbell, in their pastel coloration, soft contours, and thought-provoking mood. She took great interest in the winter scene genre. Condition: Very good overall antique condition. Wax relined. Frame rubbing along edges with some minor associated touch up. Frame with typical wear and small losses commensurate with age. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
