Joseph Antonio Hekking was a landscape and marine painter born in 1830 in the Netherlands and died in New York in 1903. He studied in Paris and was a talented draftsman who lived in Cherry Valley, NY, Hartford, CT, Detroit, MI, and Washington, D.C. The name derives from a group of 19th-century landscape painters working in New York state. With realistic composition, they depicted romantic views of unsettled areas of the Hudson River Valley especially lakes, rocky gorges, and forests in the Catskill Mountains.
