About the Item
An Italian veduta scene by Marten J. Waefelaers (1748–1799), signed and dated “M.J. Waefelaers 1791” lower left, oil on panel. (The signature is a bit hidden behind the frame). The giltwood frame is Swedish late Gustavian, dating from the around the same period as the painting and probably original.
The view presents a tranquil city harbor and coastline, likely an imagined northern Italian coastal town. The composition opens toward a quiet inlet edged with buildings and a basilica rising above the waterline. In the foreground, three men stand at the quayside in conversation, their varied hats and coats hinting at distinct social roles in a bustling port environment. To the right, a seated painter works at his easel, absorbed in capturing the very scene before us, an elegant, possibly self-portrait.
On the left, several figures load goods into a small open boat moored at the quay, while across the inlet a solitary fisherman stands poised with his rod extended over the calm water.
Measurements are given including the frame.
Marten (or Martin) J. Waefelaers, whose surname appears in multiple 18th- and 19th-century records as Waefelaers, Waeffelaer, Waefelaer, or Waffelaerts was a Flemish painter and engraver active during the late eighteenth century. He is generally dated 1748–1799, and though documentation is limited, most historical sources identify him as born in Antwerp or active within the artistic circles of the Southern Netherlands.
Waefelaers specialized in landscapes, riverine and coastal scenes, marine views, and occasional genre or religious subjects. His work fits securely within the late Flemish–Dutch landscape tradition, characterized by clear atmospheric perspective, gentle narrative detail, and a balance between observed nature and idealized composition. His paintings typically feature small figures like fishermen, merchants, travelers set within luminous harbors or pastoral settings, echoing both the Dutch Golden Age and the refined tastes of late 18th century patrons.
He was active across regions that during his lifetime formed part of the Holy Roman Empire, the broad Central European polity that encompassed present day Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and northern Italy. Within these territories, the late 1700s art market favored picturesque landscapes and vedute, a genre Waefelaers adopted with natural fluency.
Archival notices and early exhibition records cite Waefelaers as exhibiting works in the early 1790s.
In 1792 in Ghent he exhibited three landscapes and in Antwerp in 1793, he exhibited several coastal and marine compositions listed in contemporary catalogues.
These entries represent the clearest verified moments of his public artistic presence. The dating of this painting to 1791 places it within the very period during which he was actively exhibiting.

Ariccia Bridge Landscape Painting, Oil on Paper, Circa 1850s
Located in Stockholm, SE
View of the Ariccia Bridge and the Alban Hills
This finely executed plein air landscape depicts the monumental bridge of Ariccia and the town with the surrounding Alban Hills, painted by German landscape artist Joachim Ludwig Heinrich Daniel Bünsow (born 1821 in Kiel, died 1910 in the same city). Executed in oil on paper mounted on cardboard, the work dates from his Italian period between 1853 and 1858. Not signed.
Bünsow received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1839 to 1848, studying under Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. In 1844, the Copenhagen Art Association acquired his painting "Tellingstedt in Dithmarschen." Following his studies, he traveled to Dresden, where he became associated with the circle around Johan Christian Dahl. A scholarship from the Copenhagen Academy enabled Bünsow to reside in Rome from 1853 to 1858. During this period, his landscapes evolved from the finely toned, naturalistic style of his early work to more atmospheric and idealized compositions, influenced by Louis Gurlitt.
Bünsow's early works from his time in Copenhagen are characterized by fine tonality and naturalistic rendering, reflecting the style of his teacher Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His Italian landscapes, however, exhibit a more atmospheric and idealized approach, influenced by Louis Gurlitt. Notably, Bünsow produced high-quality drawings during his time in Rome, some of which are preserved in the Kunsthalle zu Kiel.
Historical Context: The Ariccia Bridge
In the early 19th century, the local authorities sought to improve the Appian Way's safety and accessibility. The solution involved constructing bridges to span the Ariccia valley and adjacent ravines. In 1843, Pope Gregory XVI commissioned a six-arched bridge to address the elevation differences. Following his death in 1846, Pope Pius IX continued the project, entrusting architect Ireneo Aleandri with the design and Giuseppe Bertolini with the execution.
Completed in 1854, the bridge stands as a significant 19th-century engineering achievement. Featuring three tiers of elegant neoclassical arches inspired by Roman art, it measures 59 meters in height and 312 meters in length. Travertine columns at both ends commemorate the Roman milestones...

Landscape See Paint Oil on canvas Flemish Old master 18th Century Italian Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter active in Italy in the eighteenth century
Coastal landscape of the Mediterranean with architectures and figures
Oil painting on canvas (69 x 88 cm., in frame 80 x 100 cm.)
The suggestive view proposed depicts a coastal view with a bay and the ruins of an ancient building, probably a monastery or a church, and in the background another building with a garden surrounded by high walls close to the shore.
The type of landscape, typical of the southern Italian environment, and the intimate atmosphere that welcomes the scene, attributes the authorship of the work to a landscape painter active in the eighteenth century, presumably in Italy in this period, with immediate references to the Dutch school , and in particular to the production of Jacob de Heusch and above all of Gaspar van Wittel, considered the progenitor of Italian landscape painting.
In fact, in the rendering of the architectural details, in the purity with which the buildings have been reconstructed, as well as in the atmosphere that encompasses the entire landscape, a marked correspondence to the so-called "Vanvitellian realism" can be seen: in fact, a comparison with a certain series of views which the Dutchman...
