About the Item

Martin Gwilt Jolley (1859–1916) Wild Clematis, Monte Solaro, Capri, circa 1886–1889 Oil on canvas, signed lower right; titled, signed and dated 1886 verso In an ornate period giltwood frame A luminous Mediterranean landscape by Martin Gwilt Jolley, painted during the artist’s Italian period and depicting the slopes of Monte Solaro on the island of Capri. The composition centres on a seated female figure partially shaded by flowering wild clematis, set within a sunlit hillside overlooking the Bay of Naples. Jolley’s handling is confident and painterly, combining carefully observed natural detail with a softened, atmospheric palette characteristic of late Victorian plein-air painting. The brushwork is animated yet controlled, particularly in the treatment of foliage and wildflowers, where dappled highlights and broken colour reflect the influence of contemporary French naturalism and the broader European plein-air movement. The figure is integrated harmoniously into the landscape, reinforcing the pastoral, contemplative mood rather than dominating the scene. Jolley exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, and works from his Mediterranean travels were especially admired by late-19th-century British collectors. Italian subjects such as this were highly sought after for country house interiors, where they offered both artistic refinement and an evocation of cultivated Grand Tour sensibilities. Today, such works remain equally suited to elegant townhouse settings, bringing light, colour and a sense of escapism to more formal spaces. This painting is fully signed and further inscribed on the reverse, providing excellent documentary interest. A strong, well-resolved example of Jolley’s mature work and a fine representative of British painters working in Italy in the late Victorian period.
