Mid Century Modern French oil on board landscape of Beauce in France. The painting is signed and dated bottom left and presented in a plain period wood frame with light gilding.
A large and imposing landscape of the cereal fields in the Beauce region of France. With his colour palette Lavanture has created a magical composition as if the fields were part of a great ocean and the haystacks were like islands. The black telegraph poles give an additional rhythm to the painting and the roads carry the eye off into the far distance. The colours and form remind us of Japanese wood block prints. The thick use of material with an impasto technique gives a wonderful texture to the surface of the painting. It is a highly unusual and intriguing work, very chic and would make a wonderful addition to any collection or decorative scheme.
Beauce is a natural region in north-central France, located between the rivers Seine and Loire. It comprises the Eure-et-Loir modern-day department and parts of Loiret, Essonne and Loir-et-Cher.
The region shared the history of the province of Orléanais and the county of Chartres, which is its sole major city. Beauce is one of France's most productive agricultural areas.
The name derives from Latin Belsia or Belsa, said by Virgilius Maro Grammaticus to be a Gaulish word meaning "grass plain, cultivated plain." It was formerly spelled La Beausse.
It is the setting of Émile Zola's novel La Terre (The Earth).
