About the Item

A wonderful view of a charming European town. This work captures the quiet intimacy of a cobbled lane, its golden stones leading the viewer toward a cluster of whitewashed and brick buildings, crowned in the distance by the silhouette of a church tower. In the foreground, a man and child walk towards a pair of women in conversation, bringing a human warmth to the scene. The composition narrows toward the center, drawing the eye through the street towards the church, while the flanking walls create a sense of enclosure. MacCord’s painstaking brushwork, composed of short, deliberate strokes, lends a shimmering, almost mosaic quality to the surfaces. Sunlight breaks across stone walls and tiled roofs in a lively play of color. The work is oil on canvas laid to board and is signed in the lower left. It is housed in a wonderful custom wood frame. Size: 20 inches tall by 16 inches wide (painting) 26.75 inches tall by 22.75 inches wide by 1.25 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Christie’s Los Angeles, October 28, 1999, lot 83; Private collection, CA; Acquired from the above About the artist: Mary Nicholena MacCord, once a resident of Manhattan and Bridgeport, Connecticut, was recognized throughout her career for her fine sense of color and use of a pointillist technique to depict intimate landscapes and street scenes. She first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1916 and contributed on a regular basis until 1927. MacCord also exhibited at the American Water Color Society, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the National Arts Club, and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, among other venues. After her death in 1955 her estate was distributed among several Bridgeport charities. Before her death, she had arranged to establish the Charles William MacCord Fund at the Salmagundi Club, created to aid sick, needy, and disabled artists associated with the organization, in honor of her brother.
