About the Item
It may be hard to believe, but Summer Morning began as a flurry of overlapping text and expressive black-and-white oil paint. Seeking solace amidst the chaos of emotive words, Higgins turned to the landscape for a more discreat form of meaning. Over time, the painting evolved into a naturalistic scene, reminiscent of works by French painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and other pre-Impressionist artists. However, unlike those historical landscapes, this piece was created entirely from memory, drawing on the artist’s early training in plein air painting in his hometown of Chester County, PA.
One could interpret Summer Morning as a reimagined vision of the scenery that surrounded Higgins in his youth—an exploration of longing, memory, and nostalgia. The composition invites the viewer into a meditative space, echoing the universal experience of gazing into the distance and contemplating past moments of wonder in nature.
Painted in oil on canvas over the course of a month, the work underwent multiple revisions between drying periods. Higgins employed various tools, including a drywall scraper and a rubber pottery knife, to create diverse textures and spontaneous color interactions. The interplay of deep tree shadows and the soft, radiant summer sky fosters a tranquil and inviting atmosphere.
The listing includes images of the original painting, along with digitally generated mock-ups showing how it would appear framed in wood. Framing is available for an additional cost. To reduce shipping expenses, the canvas can also be shipped rolled in a tube, allowing buyers to have it stretched and framed locally.

Matt Higgins (b. 1987) is an artist and art professor based in Philadelphia, PA. He maintains an active studio practice in the Fishtown neighborhood, working across various painting styles and bodies of work. His pieces are held in numerous private collections and have been featured in a range of interior design projects, including residential properties, corporate spaces, and hotels.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
