About the Item
A beautiful mid 20th century French oil on canvas depicting the famous Le Consulat Café on Rue Norvins in Montmarte, Paris, by Maurice Loirand. Striking and excellent quality work by this very interesting artist.
Often referred to as Paris’s cutest café, Le Consulat is one of the oldest in Montmartre and has counted among it's patrons the likes of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Monet in the nineteenth century; Picasso and Hemingway in the twentieth.
The work is signed lower left and presented in a superb carved and painted wood Montparnasse frame. Inscribed in Japanese on the reverse.

Size: 30.5 x 27.5 inches (78 x 70 cm) including the frame
Maurice Loirand was born in La Montagne, Loire. He was a metalworker at the Arsenal of Indret. Resistant under the Occupation, he became a self-taught artist and moved to Paris where he met the painters André Lenormand, Fernand Léger, Matisse and Picasso. He also knew the poet René Guy Cadou, who particularly appreciated his work.
He travelled extensively with exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, New York. He lived in Japan for around 15 years where married the poet Kazué Shimotori, before returning to Paris.
Maurice Loirand's paintings can be found among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Naive Art Museum Anatole Jakovsky of Nice, the Museu do Sol in Penápolis.
