About the Item
A beautiful mid 20th century French oil on canvas depicting a fishermman cleaning his boat, by Maurice Loirand. Striking and excellent quality work from the 1960's by this very interesting artist.
The work is signed lower left and presented in a fine painted wood Montparnasse frame. Inscribed with title on the reverse.

Maurice Loirand was born in La Montagne, Loire. He was a metalworker at the Arsenal of Indret. Resistant under the Occupation, he became a self-taught artist and moved to Paris where he met the painters André Lenormand, Fernand Léger, Matisse and Picasso. He also knew the poet René Guy Cadou, who particularly appreciated his work.
He travelled extensively with exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, New York. He lived in Japan for around 15 years and married the poet Kazué Shimotori.
Maurice Loirand's paintings can be found among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Naive Art Museum Anatole Jakovsky of Nice, the Museu do Sol in Penápolis.

Size: 16.5 x 19.5 inches (42 x 50 cm) including the frame
André Bouquet was a butcher by trade, who had his stall in open air markets. In order to have more time to paint, however, he became a factory cook and later a foreman in the same factory.
He lived only for his painting, which once he stopped working he did every day of the week, including Sundays. He is a sensitive and delicate artist, especially when depicting Parisian suburbs, of which he has caught the atmosphere remarkably. He also painted numerous snow landscapes.
