About the Item

A beautiful oil on board painting by American artist Maurice Monnard. Monnard was a Post-Impressionist painter known for his colorful cityscapes depicting the times of his generation. His work is comparable to those of Renoir, Jules Herve and Mary Cassatt. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Depicting a calm spring day with the view of a lake and a boat scene in the distance. The wooded path has shadows dancing on the ground and flecks of sunlight shining through the tree-lined way. The details are magnificent as Monnard charmingly captures the whimsicality of this peaceful day with movement; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The painting is signed lower left by the artist and with gallery tag affixed to the verso. It comes housed in a robust elaborate wood carved frame oxidized gold tone with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 24 inches Frame measures 28.25 x 32.25 inches Maurice Monnard is an American-born artist of European parentage who began to paint at an early age. As an outstanding student of the Parsons School of Design in New York, he completed a four-year course in three years which included Advertising and Fashion. While attending school, he did artwork for the Department store company W. J. Sloane. Later, he created artistic travel brochures for Pan American Airways. In his travels to London, Paris, the French and Italian Rivieras he was constantly sketching. He remained in Italy for a time to continue his studies in Fine Art. Although his paintings range from Pianissimo 1o Forte, the sensitivity and serenity of his nature are conveyed in every brush stroke. Monnard was inspired by the French Impressionists and is a great admirer of the Romantic era. All this is reflected in his work. His paintings now hang in many private collections in Europe, Australia, North and South America and are currently selling in leading galleries in Paris, New York, Palm Beach, Montreal, Houston, and Rio de Janeiro. Since his paintings have been steadily increasing in value, Monnard's art is sure to become a valued family heirloom. He has been described as an artist whose line has come and is destined to become an important artist of this century. PROVENANCE: Merrill Chase Gallery, Chicago; Estate of a Private collection Hollywood, FL; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
