Born in Russia, Millman began drawing at age 4. Five years later, he immigrated to New York. Having no formal art training, he nevertheless ran an art agency for 35 years. He retired at age 67, concentrating on his painting full time from then on. "Millman shows his national pride by painting America the beautiful. His inspiration comes from sketches and photos he made after the war, when he hitchhiked around the country hunting for landscapes he could reproduce on canvas."
He is quoted as saying: "I don't do the nutty art that they do today," he said. "I paint the whole country."
His World War II sketchbooks represent valuable historical documents including images of Belgian chateau, the ruins of bombed buildings and a view from a soldier's tent. The Center of Military History has these works.
