About the Item

This piece titled "Blocked" is an original artwork by Max Seckel is made of flashe, acrylic, and spray paint on canvas. Its debut display was during the three-person exhibition "No Garden", featuring the work of Max Seckel, Eric Kenney, and Keith Warren Greiman. As artists known for creating spontaneous environments marrying commotion and color, Greiman, Kenney, and Seckel come together to ask the question, "What is a garden?" Turning away from the manicured or disciplined, these artists explore cultivation as a lived-in environment, enhanced by the frenzy of humans and their wares. No Garden is a self-fulfilling prophecy of giving a dismal landscape a decorative title and accidentally manifesting the beauty that comes with the name. Among the lush landscapes, you can find abandoned tires, skeletons, and elements of chaos that add to the overall harmony of the land. It is the act of walking by a patch of dirt and seeing potential, similar to how these artists approach paper, panel, or canvas and envision the characters that live inside it. Greiman, Kenney, and Seckel lean into the themes of reinvention as they explore new mediums and subjects in their work for the exhibition, excited to see what grows. This is not a garden, and everything is a garden. This piece measures 8”h x 6”w x 1.75”d framed, is signed by the artist and ships in the featured frame. Max Seckel is an artist currently living and working in New Orleans, Louisiana. Max graduated from the University of Delaware in the Spring of 2009 and relocated to Philadelphia the following fall. He volunteered briefly at Second State Press (2010-2011) before shortly thereafter renting a studio and working out of Space 1026 (2011-2014). In the fall of 2104, Max made the move south to New Orleans. Initially joining and volunteering at the New Orleans Community Printshop and Darkroom (2014-2018), he eventually left the printshop to maintain his own studio space and more seriously pursue painting as an occupation.
