About the Item

A Landmark Work of Conceptual Art: Terra Incognita (1995) by Miguel Ángel Ríos. a visually striking and intellectually potent work from the highly acclaimed MAPAS series by the Argentinian conceptual artist Miguel Ángel Ríos. This piece is a seminal example of his innovative approach to exploring the profound themes of colonialism, globalization, and the reinterpretation of Latin American history. Created in 1995, a period marking the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, Ríos began creating his map series to offer a powerful critique of long histories of colonial power. The title, Terra Incognita (Latin for "Unknown Territory"), refers to the term used by historical mapmakers to label unexplored lands—often those in the Southern Hemisphere. Ríos reclaims this concept to question how traditional, Eurocentric cartography arbitrarily imposes a specific geopolitical worldview and rigid frontiers upon the "New World". The artwork transforms a historical, flat map—a representation of objective truth—into a dynamic, three-dimensional object that resists easy consumption. Ríos is renowned for his meticulous "handmade aesthetic" that merges conceptual art with traditional craftsmanship. This work utilizes enlarged photographic print printed on archival art plastic of a historical map (likely a portolan chart of the Mediterranean/European coast), which the artist has manually manipulated. The manipulated map is framed within a large canvas and encircled by a prominent red and white dashed oval border, starkly emphasizing the concept of "unknown territory." White and blue lines, reminiscent of navigational rhumb lines or a complex web, crisscross the map and extend beyond its formal borders, suggesting interconnectedness and entanglement. This powerful work represents a critical engagement with identity and place, making it an essential acquisition for any serious collection focusing on Latin American contemporary art or post-colonial critique.
