Miriam Sweeney’s “La Vie en Rose” is an aerial interpretation of Paris, mapped through its 20 administrative districts, or arrondissements, which spiral outward clockwise from the historic city center. Each section of the composition reflects the distinct identity of these neighborhoods, from the cultural heart surrounding the Louvre in the 1st arrondissement to the elegance of the 7th, home to the Eiffel Tower. Rendered in smooth, layered acrylic, the painting transforms urban structure into a vibrant, tactile surface.
Sweeney’s practice reimagines cartography as a poetic and emotional language rather than a literal one. Intersecting lines evoke streets and circulation, while softly contoured fields of color distinguish each arrondissement, suggesting the rhythms, histories, and lived experiences that define the city. Miriam Sweeney is a San Francisco–based contemporary artist whose work transforms city maps into layered abstract paintings that reveal the hidden histories embedded within urban landscapes. Inspired by aerial perspectives and cartographic systems, Sweeney explores the tension between order and chaos, examining what maps record, what they omit, and what lives beneath the surface of the city.
Working primarily in acrylic, Sweeney builds textured compositions through successive layers of paint, each representing different moments in time unfolding within the same geography. Her flowing, curvilinear forms evoke streets, intersections, and the pulse of urban life, creating visual palimpsests where past and present coexist.
