About the Item

“Nature’s Echo” is a small-format abstract figurative contemporary landscape — but despite its intimate size, it immediately becomes a focal point in any space. Its vibrant colours and dynamic movement draw the eye instantly, offering a powerful visual presence far beyond its dimensions. In this piece, a cluster of slender trees rises from a tapestry of expressive colour. Their trunks bend and sway as if carried by an unseen wind, each movement captured with bold, confident brushstrokes that give the scene a sense of life and vibration. The landscape is not shown as a still image but as a dynamic force. Layers of emerald green, warm ochre, lavender, and deep blue merge and respond to one another, expressing both harmony and transformation. The trees seem almost to converse — a gentle visual echo from one to another — giving the artwork its poetic name. Natalya often says: “Nature speaks if we know how to look,” and “My landscapes are not depictions — they are my inner echo of the world around me.” A key influence in this painting is the luminous, colourful nature of the South of France, a region that has deeply shaped Natalya’s artistic vision. She is captivated by its intense light, sculptural pines, and the striking contrasts between sunlit fields, deep shadows, and vibrant vegetation. This landscape — the same that once inspired Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Matisse — aligns naturally with her instinctive love for expressive colours and fluid, energetic forms. The turquoise skies, terracotta earth, violet hills, and rhythmic movement of the pines offer exactly the kind of visual emotion she seeks to translate into paint. In “Nature’s Echo,” her signature approach is fully present: vigorous strokes, bold contrasts, and a sense of immediacy that conveys movement and presence. While one may feel subtle affinities with the great colourists of the South, the voice remains entirely her own — authentic, intuitive, and rooted in her emotional response to nature. This expressive small-format landscape brings vitality, warmth, and a vibrant energy, making “Nature’s Echo” a striking focal point that invites the viewer to pause, slow down, and reconnect with the poetry of nature. About the piece: Acrylic paint on cotton stretched canvas, ready to hang Finished with a special gloss varnish Size: 24 x 18 x 1.5 cm (9.45 x 7.09 x 0.59 in) Signed on front and back International delivery from France About the Artist: Originally from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, and now based in Lyon, France, Natalya Mougenot has spent over two decades refining her artistic voice. Her multicultural background and personal experience inform her bold, expressive works, which have found homes in private collections around the world. Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut—resulting in paintings that are raw, instinctive, and emotionally resonant. Across her work, three values guide her: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty. “Authenticity is everything,” she says. “People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not. I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.” In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also featured on this platform—mirrors her painterly sensibility: a poetic, observational approach that captures the quiet power of everyday life. For her, photography is both inspiration and a form of presence, often serving as visual sketches for future paintings or existing as standalone works. Artist: Merton Clivette (American, 1868-1931) Title: Landscape Year: Circa 1925 Medium: Gouache Paper: Heavy Bristol type Size image: 22.75 x 28 inches Paper size: 22.75 x 28 inches Signature: Signed lower left by the artist Condition: Excellent Frame: Unframed About the artist. Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock. He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations. Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him. Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes. He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. A description and critical analysis of his work in included in the book by Henry Rankin Poore...
