NOTES: Artist and teacher, born in Wantage, Berkshire, who studied at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, 1969, and in the fine art department of West Surrey College of Art
Design, Farnham, 1969–74. Went on to teach between 1975–86 at Camden, Central and Putney Inner London Education Authority Institutes, Canterbury, Chelsea, City and Guilds, Kingston and Wimbledon Schools of Art. From 1986–7 lived and worked in Mexico and America; in London, 1987–92; South Africa, 1992–5; then in London and Talgarth, Powys. Exhibited in RA Summer Exhibition from 1975; Whitechapel Open, 1978; Artists in Adult Education, at Woodlands Art Gallery, 1982; England
Co, 1991; and Hunting Prize Awards, from 1996. Later solo exhibitions included Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford, 1991; Canvas Gallery, 1993; and Great Western Studios, studio shows, from 1995.
Bally was fascinated by natural surfaces, and his enigmatic, allusive works, as in his solo exhibition at Brecknock Museum, Brecon, in 2003, left much for the viewer to interpret. Sheffield City Art Galleries, Stellenbosch University Museum and a number of corporate collections hold examples.
