About the Item
Nikolai Timkov (1912-1993) Russian artist. Oil on board dated 1968 in a gold-leaf frame.
Titled and signed twice on the verso. Titled: The Kremlin.
Measures: 13 ½ x 20. Frame size: 20 1/4 x 26 3/8.
This painting is a great example of Timkov's ability. Note the beautiful mauve shadings in the snow.
Born in 1912, Nikolai Timkov began his studies at Rostov-on-Don Art Tekhnekum between 1927-1931. He continued his studies at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Moscow from 1933-1939. The artist was active in Moscow from 1930-1933, thereafter, he relocated to Leningrad where he spent the majority of his career.
Timkov has had an extensive history of exhibitions throughout the Soviet Union including the prestigious All-Union Art exhibition, Moscow 1955 and Soviet Russia exhibition, Moscow, 1960.
Timkov is one of the more noted Russian painters of the 20th century. Though trained in the academic tradition of Russian Realism at the Academy of Arts, Timkov developed his own unique style characterized by impressionistic brushwork and fresh compositional solutions. His works hang in all major Russian museums, including the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow.

Excellent condition.
Anatoly Sokoloff was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in July, 1891. He completed studies at the Academy of fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He became the Commissioner of fine Arts in the Crimea, and later Academic Professor of Art. By the 1940s Sokoloff had settled in San Francisco.
In Europe, his works are to be found in museums and private galleries of Germany, Romania, and Austria. Many are Royal portraiture. In 1953, the government of Argentina commissioned the artist for the painting, The Great Captain for their House of Congress. In 1961, again commissioned by the government, he completed the work, Crossing of the Parana River.
