# The breath of the Black Sea, captured in oil
Standing on the Odessa coast in the summer of 2025, artist Alexander Khrapachov captured the very soul of the Black Sea—its turbulent energy, its changing beauty, its eternal dialogue with the sun and the rocks.
“At Sea. Odessa” is not just a landscape, it is a sensory memory of a hot day on the southern coast. Each stroke of oil preserves what cannot be photographed: the smell of iodine and seaweed, the feeling of hot sand underfoot, the sound of waves crashing against the rocky coast.
Working en plein air, Khrapachov combined academic precision with impressionistic freedom. Fragments of rocks are painted with geological accuracy, but the sea is conveyed with expressive, lively strokes – just as it really is: mobile, restless, always different. The sunlight reflected in the wet sand creates an optical play of warm and cold shades that make the painting literally breathe.
