About the Item

This atmospheric study shows a solitary standing stone rising in the flat landscape of Uppland, silhouetted against a luminous sunset sky. Broad, animated brushstrokes capture the shifting colors of dusk, the dark forest line, and a flock of birds in flight. The bautasten, a prehistoric memorial monument, lends the scene a sense of historical depth, connecting the transient light of evening with enduring traces of Sweden’s ancient past. Olof Hermelin was a painter, writer, and translator, descended from an old noble family and trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. After travels in France, Italy, and Belgium, he absorbed the influence of the Barbizon school and introduced plein-air painting to Sweden. He became known above all for his landscapes of Uppland and Södermanland, where he combined naturalistic observation with a Romantic sensitivity to history and memory. Active as both an artist and cultural figure, Hermelin played a significant role in shaping late 19th-century Swedish landscape painting. Oil on metal plate, signed and dated lower right “O.H. 1901” Unframed 14 × 22.5 cm, framed 23.5 × 32 cm
