About the Item

This historically interesting painting by Otto Ludvig Richarde (1862-1929), signed and dated 1891, shows a small private gaffe cutter sailing boat passing the lighthouse Böttö in the distance on a sunny day with some scattered clouds on the Swedish west coast just outside Gothenburg. Also visible in the the distance is a steam towboat towing a large sailing ship, a barque, heading for the Gothenburg docks. The cutter with the sails fully set have two proud sailors onboard in their best sailing outfit. Hoisted on the mast is the Swedish Royal union flag or ensign used between 1844-1905. Also hoisted is the ensign of the Royal Swedish Sailing club which was founded in 1878. At the time, in 1891, when this painting was created, being a member of a sailing club and having your own sailing boat was still a luxury and something for a few privileged. Otto Ludvig Richarde, was born in 1862 in Gothenburg and died in 1929 in Båstad, was a Swedish artist who painted mainly marine paintings but also coastal scenes and views of landscapes. He studied art in Stockholm 1879–1882 and then in Copenhagen 1884–1887 and made study trips to several countries in Europe. He remained most of his life on the Swedish west coast. He is represented in the Swedish Naval History museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Gothenburg Historical museum and others. Böttö, beacon and former manned lighthouse in the outer part of the entrance to Gothenburg sits on a tiny island, outside the big island of Brännö in the Kattegatt sea. It was manned between 1841-1964. The union mark of Norway and Sweden was a symbol of the Union between Sweden and Norway. It was inserted into the canton of the Swedish and Norwegian national flags from 1844 to denote the partnership of the two countries in a personal union. The mark combined the flag colours of both kingdoms, equally distributed, to reflect their equal status within the union. The stand-alone design of the mark was used for the diplomatic flag and the naval jack of the union. The union mark remained part of the flags of both countries until it was removed from the merchant and state flags of Norway in 1899 because of increasing Norwegian dissatisfaction with the union. It remained on the naval ensign of Norway and all Swedish flags until the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905. The Union of Sweden and Norway came about as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, when the king of Denmark–Norway, on the losing side, was forced to cede Norway to the king of Sweden by the Treaty of Kiel in 1814. Norwegian resistance led to the declaration of national independence. A brief war with Sweden resulted in the opening of a way for a special union. In 1814, a treaty was signed and at the same time, the Norwegian parliament chose to elect Charles XIII of Sweden as King of Norway. Sweden has the most islands in the world, 267 570 to be exact. Because it's surrounded by water and have all these islands it has become very popular during the modern 20th century to go boating in Sweden.
