Paolo Monaldi (Rome, Italy, 1710-1779) Title: Peasants playing cards Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Without frame 31 x 40.5 cm - with frame 43.5 x 52 cm Carved and gilded wooden frame Not signed Famous for his production of bambocciate, Monaldi in this small canvas offers us a happy rural representation in which a group of peasants are intent on playing cards and sipping good wine. A cross-section of simple life, in the calm landscapes of the Roman countryside in the 18th century. The landscape depicted on the painting has a background with light blue sky, and on the right side under an old tree jutting into the picture, partly sitting there are three peasants playing cards. To their left, a couple in love with a seated woman in red, white and blue clothing, is holding a glass of wine in her hand, in front of her a man is holding a carafe of wine in his hands for topping up. He looks lovingly at the woman, who returns his gaze.
