About the Item

This evocative 1930s–1940s vintage oil painting by Denver modernist Paul K. Smith depicts a timeless New Mexico adobe church, likely inspired by the iconic San Francisco de Asís Mission Church in Rancho de Taos. Rendered in a modernist style, the composition captures the architectural solidity and spiritual presence of Southwestern mission churches—an enduring subject of American modern art. Painted in oil on canvas, the scene features warm, earthy tones of rich reds, ochres, and browns, dramatically contrasted against a luminous blue sky with softly drifting clouds. Accents of blue, white, red, and yellow animate the architectural details, revealing Smith’s skilled balance of color, form, and atmosphere. The result is a powerful yet serene landscape rooted in the visual language of the American Southwest. Although unsigned, the painting is fully authenticated and comes directly from the artist’s estate. It is elegantly presented in a custom gold metal leaf frame with a hand-painted wood mat and anti-reflective museum glass, enhancing both preservation and display. Framed dimensions measure 26 x 22 x 1 inches, with an image size of 17 ½ x 21 ½ inches. A student of John E. Thompson and an active member of The Colorado Fifteen, Paul K. Smith was a key figure in Colorado’s early modernist movement. His work is represented in the Denver Art Museum’s Anne Evans Collection. An exceptional work for collectors of Southwestern art, American modernism, and New Mexico mission paintings.
