About the Item

Paul Lecomte (1842-1920) A landscape with a bather Oil on canvas signed on the lower right 34 x 46 cm Framed : 42.5 x 55 cm This landscape by Paul Lecomte is particularly original within his body of work. Firstly, it features a young nude woman, which was unprecedented for the artist and was a daring display of realism. Secondly, it is rendered in a silkier and softer style than the rest of his work. This perfectly exemplifies the fact that this painter always knew how to reinvent himself and evolve his inspiration and style. The atmosphere, which combines realism with a dreamlike quality, is striking. This strongly evokes Symbolist art of the period, as well as the paintings of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824–1898). This source of inspiration clearly played a role in the composition of this painting, and it is fascinating to see how Lecomte used it as a starting point to create a charming, reverie-filled work that nevertheless remains entirely typical of his style. Indeed, we find the attention paid to the soft harmony of colours and the role given to the tree in the foreground to open up the scene. All of these features are very typical of his work. Paul Lecomte was born in Paris on April 15, 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes. He is considered as one of the last quality representatives from the Barbizon School. He was the pupil of the painter Emile Lambinet (1813-1877) but the influence of Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies are the most noticeable in the developpement of his style. His art is deeply influenced by japonism just as his almost exact contemporary Claude Monet. He painted in Brittany, Normandy or South of France but also in England where he exhibited his works also. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868 onward, winning different medals and awards. He died in Paris on March 21, 1920. Works by his hand are held by the Louvre Museum and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris the Musée des Beaux Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Baron-Martin in Gray. Literature : Benezit, Schurr
