This striking oil landscape is dominated by a vast, cinematic sky, rendered with the rapid, "plein air" brushwork that defined the late 19th-century French school. Rather than a static view, Schmitt captures the fleeting transition of light and weather over a quiet farmstead. The low horizon line allows the towering, cumulus clouds to take center stage, showcasing the artist’s mastery of atmosphere and movement.
Schmitt, a pupil of the master Antoine Guillemet, demonstrates his command of light and atmosphere here. The sky is rendered with a lively impasto, while the vibrant, saturated greens of the riverbank suggest the height of a French summer. The composition is grounded by a rustic farmhouse, a recurring motif in Schmitt’s celebrated views of the Oise and the outskirts of Paris.

This refers to Schmitt’s friend, the celebrated Art Nouveau sculptor and aviation pioneer Léon Delagrange. Our oil on board bearing the mark of the Paris colour merchants "Maison Merlin Paul Denis Succ, rue de Medicis" measures 35 x 24 cm and is dedicated and signed at the lower right.
