About the Item

Philip Wilson Steer O.M. 1860-1942, was an English painter, and influential teacher of art. His father was a portrait painter and art teacher and this is where the son was first influenced in the study of art. Phillip Wilson Steer studied at the Gloucester School of Art and at the South Kensington School, he travelled to Paris where he continued his studies at the Academie Julian and the Ecole Des Beaux Arts. He became a follower of the impressionist style and was known for his beach scenes and seascapes depicting bright colours and a command of the gradations of light and shade which is visible within this composition. This picture is in Folkstone where he visited when painting various works throughout the area including Dover, the painting shows the corner of Manor Way and the Sandgate Road, the building was a wine merchant , this building is still in place today, however the wine merchant is no longer there. This is a newly discovered painting by Steer and has yet to be exposed to the artistic aficionados within the sphere of knowledge of Philip Wilson Steer. We have included a number of variations of images of the work which include the before and after cleaning, Infra red, and showing how he painted images within the cloud formation, a familiar tactic for the most experienced and knowledgeable artists over the last 500 years. The picture remains unsigned but this is a deliberate factor in War artists work, especially during wartime. I have included further information on the artist and his works for your interest. Philip Wilson Steer (1860–1942) was a pivotal figure in British Impressionism and an influential educator at the Slade School of Fine Art. Trained in Paris at the Académie Julian, he initially gained notoriety for avant-garde beach scenes characterized by a loose, French-inspired handling of light. By the early 20th century, his style evolved into a more traditional English aesthetic, heavily influenced by the works of J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. World War I and the South Coast During the First World War, Steer’s career took a significant turn when he was recruited by Lord Beaverbrook for the British War Memorials Committee. Tasked with documenting the Royal Navy, Steer focused extensively on the Kent coast: Dover (1918): Steer spent a productive period in Dover, where he captured naval formations and the bustling activity of the harbor. His works from this era, such as Dover Harbour from the Parade (1918), often utilized pencil and wash or oil to depict warships against the backdrop of the white cliffs. Folkestone: During his time in Kent, Steer also visited Folkestone, producing works that captured the local architecture and atmosphere. These include detailed observations of town life, such as his depictions of Sandgate Road, which showcased his ability to blend structural realism with his signature atmospheric light. These wartime visits represent a rare moment where Steer’s typical coastal leisure subjects were replaced by the industrial and military reality of a nation at war. Steer continued to teach at the Slade until 1930, mentoring prominent artists like Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer. In 1931, he became the first living artist to receive a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery and was awarded the Order of Merit. His late work turned increasingly toward fluid, almost abstract watercolours as his eyesight began to fail. These biographical articles detail Steer's artistic development, his wartime service on the South Coast, and his legacy:
