Vintage French Post-Impressionist Landscape oil painting on stretched canvas by French artist Pierre-Eugène Clairin (1897-1980), signedin the bottom left and dated 1931. This delightful post-impressionist oil painting on canvas is of a tanquil riverside bordered by little houses. The hues are light and the canvas is full of busy brushstrokes giving animation and texturing.

Signed: Pierre-Eugène Clairin (1897 - 1980) was a French painter, illustrator and engraver.
Coming from a military background, Pierre-Eugène Clairin studied in England and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1913, studying in Fernand Cormon 's studio. He enlisted in the cavalry, then later the Air Force in 1915, becoming a war pilot in the First World War. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the Médaille Militaire and the Legion of Honour.
After the war, in 1919, he entered Paul Sérusier's studio at the Académie Ranson. There he met Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard who introduced him to engraving and lithography. As a child, he spent his summers in Brittany and developedalove of the area. At the 1921 Salon d'Automne, he exhibited Breton landscapes. He also exhibited his Pont-Aven paintings at the Galerie Druet, where he met Pierre Farrey. In 1927, he signed a contract with the Bernheim Gallery which exhibited his work in New York. In 1929, he received the Abd-el-Tif Prize and regularly travelled to and stayed in Morocco and southern Algeria.
Later he settled in Saint-Loup-de-Naud and for the 1937 World's Fair, he decorated the pavilions of Île-de-France and Vatican City State (earning him a gold medal) as well as the National Conservatory of Music . Mobilized in 1939, then demobilized in 1940, he organized a resistance network in Saint-Loup-de-Naud. In 1946, he went on missions and lectures to the United States and worked notably for and with Albert Camus , whom he had met in 1929 in Algiers. He received the Grand Prix de l'Île-de-France in 1957. From 1960 onwards, he painted primarily in the Île-de-France region and the Pont-Aven area. He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1967 and president of the Société des Peintres-Graveurs Français in 1970. He died upon returning from one of his last exhibitions in Pont-Aven, in July 1980.
