WORK DESCRIPTION
A luminous and vibrant Venetian study in which Rafael Durán Benet captures a narrow canal lined with traditional boats and aged façades bathed in the broken light so characteristic of his work.
His short, dynamic brushstroke shapes the movement of the water with deep greens and crisp white highlights, while the architecture is rendered in a warm palette of pinks, ochres, and yellows that evokes the humid, slightly decaying atmosphere of Venice’s lesser-known corners.
Faithful to his Mediterranean-inspired modern figurative language, Durán Benet forgoes academic detail in favor of a vivid, expressive interpretation rich in chromatic energy.
The result is a painting that balances description and emotion—an intimate view of the city, closer to the painter’s lived experience than to any typical postcard.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rafael Durán Benet (1931–2015) was a Catalan painter belonging to the post-war figurative generation. Nephew of the critic and painter Rafael Benet i Vancells, he grew up in a profoundly artistic environment.
Largely self-taught, from the 1950s onward he developed a personal language based on short brushstrokes, Mediterranean light, and a brilliant, expressive chromatic range.
For decades he worked between Barcelona, Cadaqués, and other coastal towns, producing some of his most appreciated series: seascapes, urban architecture, coastal streets, and harbor scenes.
He exhibited regularly from 1958 onward, with more than thirty solo shows, and his work is held in private collections throughout Europe and the Americas. His distinctive style makes him one of the solid names within modern Catalan painting.

Rafael Duran Benet
Rafael Duran Benet was a Catalan painter. He began painting during adolescence, by the hand of his uncle, who had the same name, and who received influences in his characteristic chromatic conception, and the artists Manolo Hugué and Rafael Llmona. In the 50s, he settled in Cadaqués, where his work acquired a marked Mediterranean character and where he treated artists like Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso. In 1958, he presented his first solo exhibition, in the Sala Vayreda in Barcelona. Then there would be 30 more, mainly in Barcelona (many in Sala Parés, to which he was linked all his life), Madrid and Cadaqués. In 2011, the City Council of his home city dedicated a retrospective in the Sala Muncunill. Benet also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Barcelona, Paris, London, Houston and Los Angeles, among others. Throughout his trajectory, he obtained several awards, among which the Henri Forman prize of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts of Paris, in 1980. The favorite themes of Benet were landscapes, marinas and still lifes, with a style close to Impressionism and a particular treatment of color. The Museum of Terrassa has two works by Benet in his funds.

Work Description
A luminous view of Barcelona’s Port Vell, with the neo-Baroque Customs building and the Portal de la Pau reflected in the calm waters of the harbor. In the foreground, sailboats and fishing boats form a horizontal frieze that contrasts with the vertical silhouettes of palm trees and towers in the background.
The brushstroke is free, broken, rich in impasto and chromatic transparency, capturing the trembling air of the Mediterranean. Ochres, pinks and blues merge into a vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of the artistic maturity of Rafael Durán Benet, who managed to infuse urban landscapes with the same poetic spirit present in his views of Cadaqués and the Costa Brava.

Rafael Durán Benet represents the continuity of post-war Catalan Impressionism, heir to Joaquim Mir and to his uncle Rafael Benet i Vancells, yet with a looser and more modern interpretation.
